Sunday Brunch – Wedding Mishaps

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , on January 31, 2010 by juliannah

I posted about Cinderella’s wedding on juliannah by design. What I did not talk about was everything that seemed to work against us getting to and from the wedding. Let me start at the beginning.

We left last Friday the 22nd. We had to travel two hours to the wedding destination and I needed air in my tires so I stopped at Discount Tire to fill the tires. The technician started filling the tires and when he got to the last one he said, “Ma’am, will you please step out of the car?”

So I do and he proceeds to show me cracks in my front tire. Then he tells me all the tires are the same and if I keep driving on them we could be in a very dangerous situation. Great. So a few hundred dollars later, we were finally on the road.

Next, we just had to leave in a winter storm that also brought blizzard conditions to the Desert Southwest. Luckily the blizzard was further north, but we did experience rain, sleet and high winds. I do not much like driving on the highway, so needless to say it was a bit of stress for me.

We arrived at our hotel, which I must say was very nice. It was a Hilton, so there you go! We went to the rehersal and then we attempted to go the rehersal dinner. I misunderstood Cinderella’s directions and of course we got lost. After going back and forth and some choice words, we finally arrived. Corvette actually had the nerve to tell me we were rude for arriving late. What does getting lost have to do with being rude! As it turned out, several other people arrived after us and they were not late because of getting lost. Hah!

One the way back to the hotel we somehow missed the street for the hotel and wound up getting lost again! I finally stopped at a store and and got directions back to the hotel. Yea, you guessed it. More choice words.

The next day we arrived at the church with no problem and caravaned to the reception. All went well and we had a great time. When it was time to leave I was told to follow one of the bridesmaids back to Cinderella’s house where I would be spending the following week with Butterfly while Cinderella and Tango honeymooned in Hawaii. Ok great except when we went to leave the bridesmaid was gone. Ok. So I went back the way we came and Corvette who was driving Cinderella’s car back pulled up along side of me and yelled that the gas light just came on. Great. Again. Of course we were kinda of in the middle of nowhere and it took awhile to find a gas station. We did. We finally made it back.

The rest of the week was pretty uneventful except for a secret between Butterfly and me that we agreed we will laugh about in twenty years. I am sure you can figure out what it has to do with. Ok, so fast forward to this Saturday, the day we are due to go home. I woke up about 8:oo and was playing with my Blackberry before everyone else woke up. The phone rings and it is our alarm company calling to say the alarm was tripped at our house and what do we want to do about it. What? I am a hundred miles away! So I tell them to call the police and then we run around like mad people trying to get our stuff together. We throw everything in the car including my Chihuahua, against his loud protests and start back. Corvette calls the alarm company and they know nothing at that point. We call my good friend Lady Godiva and she agrees to go to the house and check things out. We finally get a call back from the alarm company and they tell us the police said everything seems ok. Lady Godiva calls us back and after going to our neighbor’s house and jumping our side fence (we do not have a gate, dumb, I know) tells us everything is ok and no one broke in. Phew. We are happy to find out we still have all of our worldly possessions.

Now you would think this would be the end of it. You. Would. Think. Apparently a truck became disabled on the highway and we became stuck going about 10mph or at a dead stop for about an hour. So what would normally take 1 1/2 to 2 hours took us just about 4 hours! Can you say, What the @%$#!

You are probably wondering if I still have my sanity. Yes, but I am done with weddings, vacation, driving and false alarms.

Somebody pass me a margarita. Please!

And order me a pizza!

Sunday Brunch

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , on October 26, 2009 by juliannah

Sunday is here again. I really wish it was still Saturday, but it is not. The week flew by and on Friday, Corvette and I were off to watch Cinderella graduate from college. I left work a little early because we had a two-hour drive to where Cinderella lives. The trip started off well and about half way there we stopped at a fast food place to get something to eat. I ordered a double cheeseburger and Corvette got chicken strips. So we get back on the highway and I opened the bag to get out the food. I pulled out a closed, odd-shaped box and asked Corvette what was in the box. Right at that moment Corvette was getting on the highway which we could go one of two ways. North to where Cinderella lives or west to where there is not really anything for about forty miles. Guess where we were heading? Yea, west to the point of no return. So of course he says it is my fault for asking what was in the box. So now we had a decision to make. Go forty miles out of our way to turn around and be late or make a fast turn around on one of those emergency turn around spots and risk a ticket. Well since there was no one around we took the risk and made a fast turn and got back on the right path. By the way, in the box were the most pathetic looking chicken strips I have ever seen. They definitely did not call for the packaging they were in and Corvette said they were not all that tasty either.

When we arrived at Cinderella’s house there was excitement in the air. Sailor Girl, Cinderella’s best friend was there along with Tango and Butterfly. After taking the biggest balloon bouquet I think I have ever seen to the graduation party site7133_1271353187386_1336572765_803684_6541686_n along with cake and cupcakes we were on our way to the graduation venue which of course was at a downtown convention center. Thank goodness Tango was driving because considering the number of one-way streets, high-rise buildings and our general lack of knowledge of the downtown area, we never would have made it there.

Once we got there and after walking around the entire convention center we finally found the building the graduation was to take place in. We took our seats and waited for the processional to begin. Once it began we waited to see Cinderella. Picture 003We waited and waited and waited… Finally we saw her!

So the ceremony began. There were several speakers of course. The one that stood out was an Anesthesiologist who spoke about surgery and how he was responsible for all bodily functions including the bowl function. Yea, we could not believe he said that. But he did!

Next they read the names of the graduates and Butterfly and I stood up front and waited for Cinderella’s name to be called and wouldn’t you know it, my camera malfunctioned right when she was receiving her diploma! Arhggg.

But I got to witness it close up and my heart took a  big picture.

We went on to have a nice party at Tango’s parent’s house and… we celebrated by covering Cinderella with silly string. Why? because she did it to me when I graduated college. Pay back is a mother!!!

Oh, and Butterfly was such a trooper, but in the end she just had to give up.

Sunday Brunch

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , on October 19, 2009 by juliannah

Here we are with another edition of Sunday Brunch. I did not have a post last Sunday because of the my deployed son’s debacle car payment. After everything I went through which included multiple phone calls, begging, pleading and melting down several times, I received an email from LCpl Honda on Friday that two, count them two payments had been debited from his account (insert screaming and hair pulling from head here).WomanScreaming100X72

Now picture me, frantic Marine Mom at 6:00 in the morning desperately making more calls again and once again gathering up all the info, power of attorney, fax numbers and such for another day of stress and feeling like a major @$%*up. Just when I thought it was ok. Nope. Well the bank could not reverse the debits. They were already gone. Car payment company would not return the money. So now here I am at 9:00 in the am trying to figure out how to get money to my son who is in port in a third world country. At the time he thought he would get liberty and wanted to have money to go ashore. I checked into wiring money but Lord knows where it would end up. Sent several emails to deployed son but since it was the middle of the night there that did not work out too well. I finally started Googleing everything I could think of. Yes, Google is my friend lately. I finally found out that I could wire money from my bank to his bank. Problem solved!

The only good thing that came out of this is I received a call from LCpl Honda on Friday afternoon. He had not received my emails and was calling wondering if things had been resolved. Thank goodness I was able to tell him they were. It turns out he was not able to leave the ship so the money was not such and issue.

After all of this we managed to have a great weekend with Butterfly. We ate popcorn, Picture 001made rootbeer floats and watched many movies. Saturday was very hot here in the desert southwest and Butterfly and I made a not-so-great trip to up the park in the middle of the day. I live about a half block from a park, but it must have been close to 100 degrees that day. We managed to have a better park trip on Sunday morning with friends. Butterfly learned better bicycle skills, fed ducks and was interviewed by our local news channel that is doing a news story about cleaning up our local park lake.

The evening was better. Corvette, Butterfly and I planted two Birds of Paradise in the backyard. It turned intobird quite a mudfest, but was a lot of fun.

Sunday was great. It was my Dad’s, Grandpa DingDon’s 84th birthday. Happy Birthday Dad!!! We joined my sister Krafty, bro-in-law Speedracer, Speedracer’s Mom, Cindrella andButterfly in a celebration with good food and birthday cake. I dug up a baby cactus to plant in my yard, we had a bit of a political discussion and basically a nice day.

My Cinderella bought me a beautiful dress for her wedding. My search for the perfect dress Picture 028has been ongoing for awhile now. She also bought Corvette a great tie.Picture 027 I will now blend in with the guys in the wedding and Corvette with blend in with the ladies. Perfect.

So the recipe today for Sunday Brunch is:

Tequila Sunrise

Ingredients

2 ounces gold tequila
4 ounces fresh orange juice

3/4 ounce grenadine Cause I need it after this week!

I feel like this week was a month long. I guess because of our less than 24 hour trip to San Diego to see LCpl Honda off on his deployment. Picture 034Yes, it was hard and stressful but I am glad we went. My emotions are just now starting to come out. I miss him even though the last few years I have not seen him very much. The thought of my child on this huge ship in the middle of the sea weighs on my mind. Yes, it could be worse. I am pretty sure that he will not be in a combat situation, but he is gone and I can not just pick up the phone and talk to him. Plus, the holidays are coming and he will not be here.

This year has brought such joy and sorrow. 100_2874We are blessed to welcome Fuzzy and Wuzzy to our family. Two beautiful twin boys. Their father, my youngest son, Hippie Guy just turned 25 years old. It is hard to imagine my baby at that age. I watched him get married, have children and become a man.

Over the last three years, I watched my oldest son evolve from someone with no purpose to a person who now stands up and defends our country. He marched in Washington DC as symbol of the Marine Corps and now is part of a team force sailing the oceans in defense of our country.

For over eight years I have watched my daughter go from high school wrestling to becoming an Army MP to then becoming a mother. I watched her suffer when her daughter, Butterfly became ill with cancer. I watched here overcome and deal with all that entailed. Then I watched her scream when her son, Lolly Pop Kid went to heaven.

I guess I am having a bit of a bad week.

But beyond that, Butterfly and Cinderella went to see Miley Cyrus. aka Hannah Montana.faithconcert They had a great time.

So, today brunch’s is pretty simple. Pork Chops and Macaroni and Cheese. I have to admit that Stouffers Macaroni and Cheese is the best. Pop it in the oven and an hour later it’s done.

Two Big, thick pork chops

Season with salt, pepper, onion powder & paprika. Bake at 350 degrees for about 45 minutes and then broil on each side for about five minutes.Picture 034

Bake the Mac & Cheese according to the directions on the package.

Yum, yum easy and simple.

Yesterday, family and friends came together and we planted Lolly’s tree. The week before, I prayed for cooler weather and that prayer was answered. I was a little worried a major storm might interrupted the planting but that did not happen. The tree was a little bigger than I expected. I have a VW bug. The tree is about 5 feet tall and it actually fit in my car. I fell in love with it the moment I saw it. LCpl Honda dug the hole in the yard. Everyone arrived and we feasted on sub sandwiches and potato salad. Grandma M brought a carrot cake. Lolly loved baby carrots. Everyone took turns shoveling dirt into the hole. Then Butterfly and my friend’s daughter, Big Brown Eyes helped Lolly’s dad Tango make a well around the tree. Finally, we made a circle around Lolly’s tree and said a prayer and asked God to bless the tree.

It was a wonderful day.

After the planting, I gave everyone a picture of Lolly’s name in the sand.

I am posting our group picture, although we took many pictures that day. The rest I have chosen to keep private. I am also posting a picture of my dad, Grandpa DingDon, one of Lolly’s namesakes. No recipe today. Yesterday was simple, kind of like a picnic. Everyone knows how to make a picnic. Yes?

We love you sweet boy. Donovan. Our Lolly Pop Kid.

I had to add this drawing, done by Butterfly, Lolly’s sissy.

faithdrawing

ps. The drawing was lying on my kitchen table today and my cat decided to walk on it. The blue background was done with pastel chalk. I just spent a whole bunch of time in my bathroom trying to wash the blue color off of my cat’s feet. Fun.

Yea, I think that is all I have to say about that…

On Sunday, August 2nd I baptized my daughter Cinderella and granddaughter Butterfly. I was most honored and did so in memory of  my grandson, Lolly Pop Kid.

We are the thirteenth group in the video. It was a wonderful day. You have to wait a few seconds. But it is worth it.
